I have never asked this before but I would like to have a betterunderstanding, I have seen this a lot, when you buy a new external hard drive that says “ready formatted for mac”or in some tutorials on the internet they recommend .. “format for Mac before you use your new HD ” and I have noticed that in some cases I have not formatted my new external HDs and they just worked, so I was wondering what’s the difference between a formatted HD for PC vs Mac.

Can some explain the differance between a formatted HD for PC vs Mac or direct me to where I can find some info about formatting types?

Does this mean that I cannot use the same hard drive for both a PC and Mac? In otherwords this means that I cannot switch a HD back and forward between a PC and a Mac? I haven’t tried this since I’m afraid to corrupt the files other HD itself but it would be nice to know if this is possible.

Can some explain a little bit about the different format types?

Disk Utility User Guide

In Disk Utility, you can format an external disk that you can use with both a Microsoft Windows-based computer and a Mac. For example, you might want to do this if you use a flash drive to store data files you need to use on your Mac at home and when using a Windows-based computer at school or the public library.

WARNING: Formatting a disk or volume erases all the files on it. Save any files you need to another volume before formatting.

What Does Mac Stand For

1. In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, choose View > Show All Devices.

   If Disk Utility isn’t open, click the Launchpad icon in the Dock, type Disk Utility in the Search field, then click the Disk Utility icon .

2. In the sidebar, select the disk you want to format to use with Windows computers.

3. Click the Erase button in the toolbar.

4. In the Erase dialog, click the Scheme pop-up menu, then choose a partition scheme.

5. Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose one of the following:

   • MS-DOS (FAT): Choose this format if the size of the disk is 32 GB or less.

   • ExFAT: Choose this format if the size of the disk is over 32 GB.

6. Enter a name for the volume.

   The maximum length for the volume name is 11 characters.

7. Click Erase, then click Done.
