Mac Mail.app Encryption

In iOS 14, due out sometime at the end of summer or early fall, the process I detail below should get you going with sending encrypted email using Apple’s Mail app. Let’s Start With a Clean Slate. The Apple Mail app on the most recent Macs appear to be storing copies of encrypted emails in plaintext, an Apple IT specialist found. There is a way to turn this off, temporarily. Apple’s voice assistant Siri can look at information stored on the machine and things the user has done in. If you want to send and receive signed and encrypted messages in the Mail app on your Mac, you need a personal certificate. Step 1: Obtain a certificate For each email address you want to use to send signed messages and receive encrypted messages, you must get a certificate from a certificate authority (CA).

  1. Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.
  2. Had the same issue and I found a potential solution that seems to solve the whole SMIME issue with the mail.app for me at least. Go to keychain and find your certificate. Open the private key, go to the 'Access Control' tab, check if the mail app is there, close it (I didn't have to change anything), restart mail and you should be done.
  3. If you send encrypted emails from Apple Mail, there’s a way to read the text of those emails as if they were unencrypted — and allegedly, Apple’s known about this vulnerability for months.

When you add your email accounts (such as iCloud, Exchange, school, or work) to Mail, you get all your emails in one place—without signing in to any websites.
