The developers of the app, StudioMDHR, quickly took to Twitter to alert people about the fake app and warned people not to download it. Fake Cuphead App Removed from iOS App Store

When it came to that app, it took a little while for it to be taken off. Now, the popular side-scrolling game, Cuphead, is the latest victim of a fake scam on Apple’s App Store. A fake version of Cuphead showed up on the iOS App Store. Just like with the previous fake app, it was priced at $4.99.

It appeared legit using the same name as the real Cuphead developer, StudioMDHR. Even though the developer name looked almost identical to the real StudioMDHR, it was not. In fact, this game is not even available on iOS, so it was indeed a scam that made it onto Apple’s App Store. The news of the fake Cuphead app quickly spread online, with StudioMDHR taking to Twitter to tell people this was a fake app and not the real thing.

The company got in contact with Apple and the app was removed after a while from Apple’s App Store. It did take a little bit of time for Apple to remove the Fake Cuphead app from the App Store. Unless you were following StudioMDHR on Twitter, you probably did not see that this app was a fake version of the popular app. Cuphead is an exclusive to Xbox One and Windows PC. This means that there has been no actual release of this game on Apple’s App Store. People were excited though, to see the listing on Apple’s App Store. A lot of people thought that the developer released a version for iOS.

Fake Cuphead App Hits iOS As No Real Release in Sight

The game is an exclusive for PC and Xbox One, and the developer did hint at some plans for more support in the future. The plans are not likely to be for iOS. It seems that the developer is focused on macOS. This means that if you do see another fake Cuphead app on iOS pop up, you should be warned that it is almost guaranteed not to be the real thing. The developer has not even said that iOS support would come at all, but people are still optimistic that in due time it will happen.

The interesting part about the fake Cuphead app is that it used the legit screenshots from the game itself. A video was showing off the various touch-screen controls, which made it all seem even more legit. The main character was shown within the fake Cuphead app page. The A and B buttons seemed to be controlling the character. It is odd since the app review process for Apple was thought to be very strict. We have no clue how Apple managed not to catch that this was a fake Cuphead app. Especially considering, there is no real iOS version to begin with.

The bad part is that many people could have fallen victim to paying $4.99 for this scam app. It is definitely a bit unnerving that two fake apps within a week have been on Apple’s App Store. Even worse is that they both were $4.99. Thousands of people between these two fake apps likely have become a victim to being scammed out of money. We can only hope Apple pays more attention and does not let more fake apps like this happen in the future.
